Playing Trouble at the Weaves

At the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge held March 2006 in Phoenix, AZ. The course had one tough part that caught almost all the teams. A dummy jump placed very close to the weave poles. I'm only speculating, but maybe handlers were very concerned about the off course over the jump. And this seemed to distract these normally solid weavers from weaving. Enjoy!

Color of the poles...

The color of the poles matched the color of the walls. That may have been an issue. Every year we have a trial in downtown Boston, MA inside a big convention center. They set up white picket ring fencing and the poles are white as well. When the poles are set up near the fencing it usually throws off quite a few dogs weaving white on white. The single stripe is set pretty high so only the big dogs see the stripe at the top. Katie

Missing the weaves

It seemed there were two places with weaves (same course?) and the dogs were missing both.  The second one shown didn't have the dummy jump.  I was wondering what the set up to the second set was and what was happening there.

The second one was by the wall so maybe the white wall did play a role (as mentioned in post above).  It looked like there was striping on the poles mid range - but still an interesting thought.

Those were seasoned dogs so curious what else was going on to cause that.  The one dog (blue merle BC) just slide out of the chute but the others were headed right for the weaves and pulled up and/or out.

Very interesting.

Noise

It was also really loud there (after watching the video again). People were excited and cheering. Usually you don't experience that kind of a crowd on a normal weekend. Good training tip: Want to expose your dog to a loud enviornment while running? Take out your boom box and pop in a "live" CD. I use my Dave Matthews Live at Folsom Field CDs but anything with lots of crowd noise works. Most dogs won't notice or care about the sound, but if they are bothered you won't find out the hard way.
