Review:

In the advent of the new point system I thought I would write a book review for Coercion and Its Fallout by: Murray Sidman. Although I’m not done reading it, this book addresses coercion and how it affects people from a psychological standpoint. Basically if you are coerced into doing something, (which is basically the norm for your average American) you will end up despising whatever it is you are doing and do a bad job on purpose so that you will encounter more coercion and the circle continues. Sidman states that we expect coercion and when faced with choices or doing something because we want to we are confused, and tentative about doing it.

The new point system on Agility Vision feel like coercion and may have negative effects on the content. People who would have made a comment just because the want to might not because they will be afraid of the points, once you have a few you want more, the system coerces you to add content, even if it is not high quality.

The origins of it all.

I orginally found out about this book from a flyball friend who trained with Susan Garrett a long time ago. It is one of the best books I've ever read, and maybe I will write up my own review of it soemtime.

The story is she use to have this book on her reading list. But at some point removed it. I think the reason was that it is kinda of hard core, and kinda of depressing at times. But it really makes you think, not just about how we interact with our dogs, but everyone we come in contact with and society as a whole.

It is very hard to find, and thus kinda of expensive. But here is link if you are interested.

COECION AND ITS FALLOUT (i.e. the new point system)

Hey Alicia! You are quite a rebel, ;-).. Down with the point system, inflated content and high gazoline prices while we are at it! And don't try to coerce me to read this book, ;-), Luz has already attempted to order it online mainly due to its prohibitive price.

P.S.: My youngster-gangster Yang-Yang wants to be your dog.. though between you and me, he is a Master Coercer himself when it comes to getting what he wants.

..so longer-stronger..

Olga.

So you are going to coerce me into taking chinese bc Yang-Yang? It won't take much. Tell Luz he can borrow our copy of this book if he really wants to chew on it...

Me want 杨 杨.

杨 杨

These amazing characters look so pretty! Yang-Yang recognized his name right at first glance, ;-).

Now, Luz is considering reading a second hand book you so kindly offered, but he'd rather buy a VERY expensive copy of his own, after his beserker table performance inspired him to launch his very own online video show.

Eric, has Luz talked to you about it yet?

..so longer-stronger..

Olga.

$22.95 version available

Just FYI-- There is a 2001 updated version of this book (and a Study Guide too!) at the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies

http://store.ccbsstore.com/searching.asp?cat=Everyday+Life&cR=categories

They have other good titles too, like "From Panic to Power"

It sounds like a great book and one I should add to my library.  Thanks for the recommendation.
