Weirdest thing your dog ever ate?

hycaliber agility's picture

My sheltie will eat anything and everything she can get a hold of... what's the weirdest thing your dog ever ate?

Jeep's list goes on and on...

I would say her top 5 munchies were:

1.) Amber Sunset Yankee Candle Sampler Candle (left the label so I was able to see which scent she preferred).

2.) Entire bag of carmel filled chocolate easter eggs (including all the individual foil wrappers, again, left me the label).

3.) Half a box of colored pencils.

4.) Recently ate 3/4 of a bannana peel.

5.) Half of my $170 History of Western Civ book, Tag stole it away when I caught her in the act. Hey, I feel the same way about History sometimes... ;)

Let me add that all of these things were either on a shelf, or on a desk. She's figured out she can push the rolling chair around to help her get to what she happens to have a craving for... since the history book episode the wheels don't roll anymore ;) She's probably ordered herself a new one of Staples.com by now, though.

Too Funny!

At least most of what Jeep eats resembles food!  She sounds very resourceful!

I had a mixed breed who had a fettish for eating underwear and bikini bottoms.  Let me tell you it's a little embarassing when you're at a busy dog park and your dog decides to poop out a thong! And, to make matters worse, it's not coming out on it's own so you have to step in to help! Embarassed

dried fruit

I know Moose ate some dried Apricot last week. And if I peel an orange and throw em outside, after they dry in the sun the dogs will eat the orange peels.

Fresh Bread, mmmmm

My first dog, a collie, aussie cross, ate a whole loaf of fresh bread off the counter while we were out. We could still smell the freshly baked bread when we returned, but the loaf has vanished without a trace. Innocent

the weirdest thing my dog ever ate

Years ago, I was cleaning up the dog area and I came upon something imbedded in what I was picking up.  It scared the heck out of me, it was bright pink and round and was staring at me.  If anyone remembers the inflatable bright pink rubber hedgehogs that you could blow up for your dog, Gaea had been chewing off the body parts on hers.  The hedgehog's eyeball was staring at me!  The next day I found the bright pink spines in what I had to pick up but I was over my worry at that point!  The remnants of the hedgehog went in the trash and we never had that toy again.  I was just happy that all of the hedgehog anatomy made it though Gaea's system.  Gaea was my first tervuren.

My horse's leg!

One of my horses got kicked and broke a small splint bone in her leg last Sunday.  On Monday, they did surgery here at the ranch since she wouldn't load in the trailer.  They removed the bone (4"+ long) and several other pieces that were fractured.  The horse will be fine since it happened at the best possible place in her leg.

Yesterday the bones were in my garage and my Samoyed got to them and ate them.  Yuck!  My first thought was I now had to surgically remove them from her stomach!LOL  Hopefully she chewed them up and they'll pass.  It still freaks me out!

Horse's leg....yuck!

Renee - That is seriously crazy.  First that your horse broke it's leg, second that your dog ate it.  I guess that is some pretty good recycling program you have going on at your place.  How is the horse doing?  Will it have a full recovery?  How is your dog doing?  Hope you didn't mind me singng the duck song during our team relay.  We did awesome as a team, even if Della and Django were in a Pickle!  Alicia

Ferrero roche's and curry

Can't top the horse's leg story...my first dog (she's a little 11" black mix) ate a whole box of ferrero roches...wrappers, papers, stickers AND the christmas wrapper she had to get through to get to the chocolates. Thankfully there really isn't much in the way of "chocolate" in those treats. The emergency clinic suggested we feed her petroleum jelly to help all that paper and foil out...that was lovely on it's way out both ends btw. And as a side effect...lbd (little black dog) now has a fetish for petroleum jelly. Blech. Same dog ate a pair of doc marten boots and a world atlas (not the whole book but pretty close). Sigh.  My whippet got to steal almost a whole plate of curry when I was called back to work to assist with an emergency surgery at the vet clinic I worked at at the time. Now he ALWAYS comes to the table when I make curry...seems to think he's entitled to his own plate. Same dog licked just the peanut butter off a piece of toast once...and left the toast! Double sigh...

Daddy's sock

My lab ate my husband's sock.  She stole it as I was loading up the washing machine and, after a game of chase, the sock was nowhere to be found.   Hydrogen peroxide administered and no sock.... so it was off to the vet.... where they induced nausia .... I was feeling foolish... still no sock 30 minutes later... Had she really eaten it?... Then, low and behold .... it came out the way it had entered her body.    We donated the sock to the vet's office.... It's once matching partner sorely misses it, and is now seeking a new career as a pets.com mascot.

All's fine

The horse is recovering perfectly.  She doesn't seem to miss her bone.LOL  She'll get her stitches out in a week and hopefully will be able to go outside in a small turnout at the same time.

The dog is acting normally. Haven't seen sight of the bones yet.  There was also a 1" sq. chip, along with lots of little pieces that I'd think I'd see if she didn't chew it.  She does whinny and eats more grass now though.

I loved the rubber duck song.  The song made the whole crazy duck relay worth it!

Sheltie that eats EVERYTHING

Hey guys! This is my first post here! I thought I'd add a Canadian Connection to your group!

My sheltie Kelvin (aka: The Kelvinator!) eats everything! He's getting better now, but was a horrible puppy for eating things he shouldn't! Here are a few of the things:

The cord from an unplugged clothing iron.

A huge chunk of cord from an unplugged computer monitor, along with a bunch of the little, silver, metal wires inside.

Chewed and swallowed the leather off of a pair of suede gloves

Chewed and swallowed the leather soles of his "Muttluk" winter boots (I'm pretty sure he was telling me how he feels about his boots!)

He ate an entire leather shoe, leaving only the harder sole.

I once saw a large OPENED safety pin sticking out of his stool while I was picking it up on our walk. (he must have picked it up in the park because I don't even own safety pins!)

He selected a brand new soft pink pencil crayon and chewed it into large, pointy slivers which he then swallowed, leaving very little behind.

He also ate an entire blue pen, including the flexible ink tube in the middle, which he later passed completely in one piece! YUM!

He has eaten two agility rossettes that were hanging on the side of his ex-pen. One was a third place Standard run and one was a fourth place Snooker....luckily he left the big metal button in the middle of the rossette, but he did swallow the cardboard backing, the big staple and everything else. (now I can understand eating the snooker one, but COME ON!heehee we're NOT snooker fans!)

Most recently he got into the garbage (totally MY fault) and ate the enter carcass of a 1/4 chicken, ribs and wing bones and all. It's been two weeks...I haven't seen him pass any bones...he hasn't thrown up and he appears fine, but I'm still very worried out it!

As a puppy he also tore up the vinyl flooring that we put down in his pen area and chewed a giant hole in the dry wall on the flat part of the wall....(not a corner!)

I'm sure I'm leaving out some items, but that's all I can think of right now.

I often tell him, "it's a good thing you're cute!"

Oh yeah...and he only just turned THREE!!

Iron stomach!

Wow, I think you win the contest!LOL Okay, so no contest but your sheltie must have an iron stomach.

I'm showing my husband this story so he won't think our Samoyed is so bad.

The big question...did the pen still write?

Renee

Iron Stomach

Hmm..good question. Oddly enough I didn't think about trying to write with it again. LOL He also ate a GIANT red pillar candle and his breath smelled like crayons for days! He's certainly made me have to become a better house keeper! Crystal & Kelvin (Giant Mutant Sheltie Extraordinaire!)

"What Did Tango Eat Now?"... Dr. Steve Abulafia - numerous times

What a fun question and bunch of answers to come back to after having been away from AgilityVision for a while.  From my subject line, you can imagine that my Tango has eaten his way around many items in our house -- mostly food, though.  His best "steal and eat" was an entire box of Hawaiian bread mix for the breadmaker.  He ate the entire bag of flour mix!  Somehow, thankfully, he missed the yeast package!

Slyder has picked up his habits, but she eats non-food items.  Such as $120 in cash once.  6 20's were folded in half on the desk - she grabbed them and ate them!  Also pens and drink coasters are favorites of hers as well.  The funniest thing she'll eat though is an empty capsule covering.  One of our dogs gets VetriDisc capsules for her back.  We open them up, dump the powder in her food, and sometimes the capsule covers are left on the counter.  They kept disappearing and I kept wondering where to!  Finally I caught her.  How good could an empty capsule thingy taste???

Glad that both horse and dog

Glad that both horse and dog are fine!!!

Dog Eating Stuff

My English Shepherd, Rufus, was famous for eating things. He probably ate about one sock per week his whole life sometimes I'd witness him swallowing one and try to pull it back out: he would continue trying to swallow! I worried at first, but they all seemed to come out in the end. We used to joke that he could eat a pair of Levis without any trouble. The biggest memory was one year at Houston Astro Hall for the Pedigree Grand Prix. The day before the first round I took him to the park (not a good idea) to stretch his legs. He was on leash, but managed to pick up a piece of bread which was crawling with fire ants. He swallowed as much as he could as I tried to get it out of his mouth... all the while we are both being stung by the horrible things. I had no idea what fire ants were, but got a quick lesson. The next morning before Round One of the GP Semi Finals he seemed groggy. I showed him his ball which was his whole reason for doing agility and he seemed interested, but sleepy. Things were looking bad. We ran and he was a good boy, but slower than usual (not surprisingly!) We missed the Finals by a fraction of a second placing 13th when we needed to be in the top 12 of 24" and 30" dogs combined. So that is the story of Rufus and the Fire Ants. Having learned my lesson, at one trial down in San Diego I kept Rufus on leash the evening before the event even while the other dogs were running about because I wanted to be careful he didn't eat anything. Then I felt sorry for him. Let him off for an instant. He found a very crispy dead rat and proceeded to crunch it just enough to swallow it whole right in front of me. I was waving dog treats at him begging him to put it down and eat the treats which were actually much nicer than dead rodent. He didn't care. The next day I was quite worried he would be dead, or worse, that it would affect his agilty performance (grin)! However, he was his usual self so the rat must have died of natural causes. Rufus had a lot of character and spent a lifetime eating so many different things. One of the best moments for him must have been the day one of my students left about a pound of various delicious dog treats in a zip lock bag after their lesson. I had just let everybody out to run about with me in the agility area and went back to answer the phone... "I left a bag of dog treats out there. You can give them to your dogs if you like." She said. Too late. I went out there and all I found was the zip of the zip lock bag. So there was something that even Rufus knew he could not eat!

Tessie's pretty good...

My little darling Springer enjoys:

1. Fruitcake. I'm talking $40, packaged-securely-in-a-tin, HEAVY fruit cake. Ate 2/3 of it and kept it all down. What a trooper.

2. Fortune Cookies. The best fortune(she usually leaves them): "Do not mistake opportunity for temptation."

3. Yellow pens, highlighters, markers, etc. The dog LOVES the color yellow.

4. Eyeglasses - only my father's, never my mother's. Never sunglasses.

5. Chapstick. She's probably eaten $100 in chapsticks in her seven-year career.

At least it was  somewhat normal stuff dogs eat... like birds and stuffed animals and ALMOST a squirrel... shes so fast but is aggressive w/ people and dogs so she cant compete in agility :(

Cats have eaten to many animals, haha , well i mean it's not funny that they ate birds...

Re: Weirdest thing your dog ever ate?

MY 5 MONTH OLD SHELTIE ATE HALF OF HER 6 FOOT LEAD, WITHOUT ANYONE KNOWING IT.  3 DAYS LATER SHE WALKED OUTSIDE AND THREW IT UP STILL IN ONE PIECE.????

Re: Weirdest thing your dog ever ate?

I read these experiences and had to share mine.  My sheltie, Shelby, has destroyed three pairs of glasses, shoes, socks, dish towels and underwear.  I just wish he wouldn't swallow what he chews because it usually comes back up at 2:00 in the morning.  Today's adventure was half of a washcloth.  Some of his other adventures are too gross to mention!  Seeing all the other stories I have to wonder if this is a sheltie trait?
