Brand New to Agility!

Hey everybody,

New here... I'm Angela, I'm 16 and I have a rescued lab mix named Kat. Not too long ago I bought a cheap starter kit on ebay (consisting of a single jump, weave poles (set of 6), a 12ft tunnel, a 15ft chute, and the bases for a teeter & dog walk). I've always wanted to get involved in the sport and since my dog is very shy, I figured it would help build her confidence. She has learned "tunnel", "chute", and "over" so far and we're working on "weave". I have yet to buy the planks for the teeter and dog walk.

We're not in any classes since I don't have the money. I've been teaching her on my own. Unfortunately I'm the one who needs the training lol. I don't really understand how to train her to go to a target, leaving my side. She is very, very attached to me so she just has to stay right by my side, especially when people are around.

Any tips for training? ...me and my dog, lol. I'd love to compete with her but we're doing it more for fun than serious competition.

Hooray! Another junior handler!

Howdy, Angela, and welcome to Agility Vision! It's really good to see another Junior Handler on here. :) You've got an awesome start on equipment (I know I'm jealous -- I've got five non-adjustable jumps, a broad jump, a 3' long teeter and a kid's play tunnel, not much for serious practice).

Here's a link to an article on Karen Pryor's clickertraining.com. Her website is a valuable resource. This should help you out!

Target Training

Hi Angela,

I did a google search on target training dogs. Check out www.wagntrain.com/Target.htm  It's an article on targeting training, seems easy to understand, how to begin, and how to progress. It is for clicker trainers, but I've known people who subsitute the word "Yes" for the click make positive strides in their training. If you do your own google search, you may find other articles that would help you.

Good luck!
